Dynamique des sédiments fins et mixtes des zones intertidales de la baie de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer
Kervella, Stephane.
This thesis aims at increasing the general knowledge on sediment dynamics of intertidal flats in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, according to physical, biological and anthropogenic factors. The conducted research is compound of three complementary studies: (1) a study of sediment behaviour through applied rheophysics on intertidal superficial sediments; (2) a hydro-sedimentary study based on identification of the forcing action (physical, biological or anthropogenic) on the intertidal flat stability over several time scales (from the event to several months); (3) a specific application of the model SiAM-2DH to the Marennes-Oléron Bay. The surface sediments shows a mechanical behaviour that mainly depends on the fine fraction for a composition that contains up...

Effect of Coarse Particle Volume Fraction on the Yield Stress of Muddy Sediments from Marennes Oleron Bay ArchiMer
Pantet, A.; Robert, Serge; Jarny, S.; Kervella, Stephane.
Coastal erosion results from a combination of various factors, both natural and humaninduced, which have different time and space patterns. In addition, uncertainties still remain about the interactions of the forcing agents, as well as on the significance of non-local causes of erosion. We focused about the surface sediments in the Marennes Oleron bay, after a general description of the site that has many various activities. The superficial sediments show a mechanical behavior, mainly depends on the fine fraction for a composition that contains up to 60% of sandy material. Fine sediments fraction has a typical yield stress depending naturally of concentration or water content. This yield could be modified slightly or significantly by adding silt or sand....

Erosions, dépots et transits sédimentaires associés dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer
Le Hir, Pierre; Kervella, Stephane; Walker, Patrice; Brenon, Isabelle.
Managing sediments in the bate de Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coast of France) can be achieved providing particulate fluxes at the scale of the basin are available as well as tidal and meteorological conditions during which major transports occur A sediment dynamics model accounting for tide- and wave-induced sand and mud transport has been applied to the Pertuis Charentais area Consolidation of pure mud and mixtures of sand and mud is accounted for The model validation is achieved by current and turbidity measurements, local altimetric surveys during one year and pressure measurements for waves on the tidal flat An asymmetry between eastern and western halves of the bay is observed on turbidity signals in agreement with a residual circulation from north to...

Spatial and temporal variations in trace metal concentrations in surface sediments of the Marennes Oleron Bay. Relation to hydrodynamic forcing ArchiMer
Strady, Emilie; Kervella, Stephane; Blanc, Gerard; Robert, Serge; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Coynel, Alexandra; Schaefer, Joerg.
Sediments quality assessment is of priority concern to provide a comprehensible overview of ecological and chemical state of an ecosystem. The Marennes-Oleron Bay, hosting the largest oyster production in France, is influenced by the historic polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary. Despite, management efforts and decreasing emissions in the Gironde watershed, Cd levels in oysters from the bay are close to consumption limit (5 pig g(-1) dw. EC no. 466/2001). In this context, the aim of the study was to assess the priority metal (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb and Th) concentrations in sediment within the Bay, by investigating spatial and temporal distribution variations and the role of hydrodynamic forcing. For that we selected three sites (east,...

Utilisation d’un altimètre (ALTUS) destiné à la quantification des dépôt/érosion en domaine littoral pour l’étude des corrélations avec les caractéristiques de vagues et les interfaces de dépôt ArchiMer
Bassoullet, Philippe; Verney, Romaric; Kervella, Youen; Kervella, Stephane; Jestin, Herve; Voineson, Guillaume.
Quantitative evaluation of erosion/deposition events of surficial sediments is crucial to understand the processes and establish sedimentary budgets in coastal areas The ALTUS system was designed for more than a decade, to meet this objective The possibilities offered by this altimeter (short-term or several months measurements) are particularly fitted for validation of sedimentary transport numerical models The recent integration of a large capacity memory card has allowed to optimize the system Indeed it is well established that wave activity is one of the key parameters for the erosion and hence govern sediment transport in intertidal/shallow water areas The ALTUS system in addition to bottom level variation recordings allows access to wave...
